Summer Learning Journey : Week 4 (Final Week)

WEEK 1 : ACTIVITY 1 : CELEBRATING A WIN

Whainga Ako : What do you do to celebrate special events? (e.g. Birthdays, Christmas and New Years)

We usually just have some food that everybody likes in the family, maybe junk food? If on a birthday mum and dad buys the birthday girl/boy a cake, most likely a chocolate mud cake. On a birthday we also have the food, that the birthday girl/boy wants. They receive one present after, that is around $50 - $100 dollars.

Our mum and dad buy us around three packets of fancy chocolate. We also get a present of our choice. One present is okay, because when we get a certificate we get another present. Since we are very smart, it is probably 40% chance to get a certificate.

WEEK 1 : ACTIVITY 2 : LORD OF RINGS

Whainga Ako : Imagine if Peter Jackson gave you 300 million NZD, instead of making Lord of the Rings 1, 2 and 3. What would you do with it?

I would donate a quarter of it to a homeless children society, (-75 Million) Give a quarter to my teachers. (5 x 20 = 75 Million ) 100,000 to each of my friend's family members. (Luke, Andy, Raymond, Vaughn, Chili.) (-10 Million.)

75 million + 75 Million + 10 Million = 160 Million

100 million goes to Peter Jackson so he could at least make one movie.

The rest of the money goes to my family (including me). (40 Million)

WEEK 1 : BONUS ACTIVITY : THE RISE OF THE 'SELFIE'

(I can't do this one, because I don't have a phone.)
_____________________________________________________________________________________________

WEEK 2 : ACTIVITY 1 : CHASING GREAT

Whainga Ako : Write three things down that you didn't know beforehand about Richie McCaw.

  • Richie McCaw has won 84 times in 95 tests he has completed. He has percentage of him winning, is around 88%.
  • On his planning list (his coach gave him), He just wrote G.a.b, (Probably meaning Great All Black)
  • He understood who the All Blacks were in the 87th World Cup.

WEEK 2 : ACTIVITY 2 : SPORTING HEROES

Whainga Ako : Who is your sporting hero? Write why they are your sporting hero. Include a picture.

Jeremy Kim

My brother is a normal sort of guy, but he mostly spends his days browsing on sites and plays games, however he is also my sporting hero. He has encouraged me and persuaded me to keep going at any sport I play. He gives me instructions and tips, after my matches. (especially in, Touch Rugby!) He is both funny and serious. He knows what I've been through, that is mostly why I respect him.

TERRIBLE PICTURE ALERT!

TERRIBLE PICTURE ALERT!

You have been warned, of my terrible photography skills. (It may look creepy)

...

...

Hopefully, no one saw this.

Salsa

  • Many of the styles and musical techniques, were formed in Cuba.
  • Cuban Salsa music became popular on the United States radio stations.
  • After decades passed, different styles of Salsa was formed. Here are some!
  • Los Angeles Style
  • New York Style
  • "Casino" Style (Maybe used commonly in Casinos?)

WEEK 3 : ACTIVITY 1 : MIXED-MEMBER PROPORTIONAL (MMP)

Whainga Ako : Choose two friends, that you would choose to friend with, if you were going to form a coalition government and why?

Raymond : Raymond, was my friend in Pigeon Mountain, I still see him nowadays! He his the smartest (under 18) person I know. I'm the smartest boy/child in Kaikohe West School, you'd have to at least quadruple my intelligence if I was going in a maths contest with him. When I'm stuck at something, he'd probably figure the question out.

Chili : Chili, is my current B.F.F. He is the only person, aside from Luke, who can bring a smile to my face when I'm working. His interests are literally my interests. Chili, is honest and innocent. He knows how to fix a problem and how to calm people's rage and anger.

WEEK 3 : ACTIVITY 2 : MIGRATION

Whainga Ako : What is your hometown? Write a list of things you could do, at your hometown. Also, write what you like most about your hometown.

New Zealand : Kaikohe/Manukau : Bucklands Beach

  • Relax at Ngawha Springs...
  • Go to the amazing fishing spots! (Opononi, Manganui...)
  • Walk/Drive to Lindvart Park, if you're lucky, you might find a game happening.
  • Walk around the society, you'd probably find people with a friendly and welcoming nature.

  • Go to the Lloyd's Elsmore (Water) Park, (it has a water slide, I think)
  • If you're hungry, go visit the takeaways, the lemon chicken is the best there!
  • Visit Bucklands Beach, a nice ordinary beach. Rock pools galore and beware of the crabs!
  • You could also visit the shops. Each of them has there own thing going.

WEEK 3 : BONUS ACTIVITY : MODERN LEARNING ENVIROMENTS

Whainga Ako : Draw, how your classroom would be designed. You may draw the layout, or use google drawings.

I forgot to do the exit and sink.  This is a complete copy of Room 18 in Pigeon Mountain.

(My old room, when I was Year 5)

WEEK 4 : ACTIVITY 1 : MOANA

Whainga Ako : Write down a summary of the trailer of Moana. (Include important parts of the story if you've watched the movie. This is optional)

It starts off with the classic disney castle introduction, with someone talking. (most likely Grandma Tala) The screen hovers over the ocean, heading to an island. Tala says that there was only ocean once. Then it goes into 'Disney Presents'. A girl (Moana) is talking to Maui, requesting to save the world.

Unfortunately, she gets thrown off her boat. Maui says, that he's not going on a mission with a kid. Then Moana persuades Maui to come with her, by using fame and glory as an example, at the aftermath. The screen goes into 'This Thanksgiving.' Then goes back to Maui and a massive ship, with the coconut warriors. (I forgot the name of them)

Maui says in a dull expression, if she has beaten a lava monster. She replies with a no, and then says have you? Maui growls a tiny bit, and the tattoo of mini-Maui writes on a tally chart, one score to Moana.

It skips to another scene, with Maui flicking the Tattoo Maui to the back. The screen goes into 'Dwayne Johnson', then Maui says his catch phrase, "It's Maui time!!" After, the magical fishing hook shines with a light blue and he transforms, most presumably into a hawk.

The screen goes into Auli'i Cravalho. Then she says the ocean chose her for a reason then she says 'come on!'. The screen moves into 'Featuring Songs and Music By... Lin-Manuel Miranda... Opetaia Foa'i... Mark Mancina. The screen moves into a scene with a boat surfing above the ocean and then it moves into a scene with a flock of the same boats.

It then moves into a scene, where it says 'Find your way' It shows Maui jumping off a cliff, and transforming into a Hawk. He then transforms back into himself and then he jumps into Moana's boat. It shows a scene saying 'Dive Right In'.

It shows Maui throwing Moana into the ocean, however she comes right back. It shows a bundle of 2-3 second long clips. Then it says From the creators of Frozen and Zootopia. It says Moana again, with Puar, Heihei, Maui and Moana being pushed up by water geysers.

I'm not going to do the Chinese or Japanese part. It took me 12 minutes to do this!

My favourite part of the movie, is when Tamatoa discovers the heart of Te Whiti is a fake. A stone covered in bio luminescent algae. He then tries to chase Maui and Moana, however fails, he says if his song was any good.

MOANA : THE SHORT VERSION

Moana is a baby, Moana saves a turtle being attacked, ocean thanks her and gives a shiny stone. The chief A.K.A her dad, picks her up, and she drops the stone. Speed up by 15 years. Moana is now a teenager. Food is scarce, because of Te Ka. Moana sings a song, and tries to get out of the reef.

However, she gets heavily injured. Grandma Tala tells Moana she will be reincarnated and become a manta ray/stingray. Tala dies. Moana goes to find Maui. The ocean tries to kill Moana. (I'm just kidding) But, leads Moana ship-wrecked on the mysterious hook island. Moana finds Maui.

Maui betrays Moana and leads her to a cave and locks her inside. He tries to escape. However, is blocked by the ocean. Maui decides to join Moana. Coconut monsters appear, they barely escape. Skip to when they go to Monster Island A.K.A Afterlife. Tamatoa has Maui's hook. Maui can't use it. Moana comes to the rescue! and distracts Tamatoa with a diversion. Maui tells Moana the sad story. Maui masters the hook. Goes to Te Ka.

Te Ka destroys both of them. Maui quits because his hook is now broken. Moana quits and throws the heart of Te Whiti into the sea. Tala comes back as a spooky ghost, there are a flock of glowing boats, Tala tells her to not give up. Moana swims down and grabs the heart. Moana tries to beat Te Ka. Maui comes again, Moana puts the heart on Te Ka's forehead. Everything's done. Maui gets a new hook and a new tattoo. The End.

WEEK 4 : ACTIVITY 2 : COUNTRY CALENDER

Whainga Ako : Would you like to be a farmer, when you are older? Why or Why Not? Give two reasons to support your answer.

I would NOT like to be a farmer.

  • Being a farmer, would be a ton of labour! I'll admit it, I am quite lazy.
  • I do not want to become smelly all the time. Farming, will (probably) get you a lot of money, however showering, will become a very common thing to do on your list of things to do.
In my opinion, there are better things for me to do, rather than to become a farmer, and
I'm not going to just trash them, and become a farmer.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

WEEK 4 : BONUS ACTIVITY : SINGING A DIFFERENT TUNE

Whainga Ako : Share the name of your favourite song, write the lyrics. Do NOT copy and paste text. To earn the full eight points, write the whole thing.

Avicii - The nights

Avicii is the artist.

Once upon a younger year
When all our shadows disappeared
The animals inside came out to play~
Hey, went face to face with all our fears
Learned our lessons through the tears
Make memories we knew would never fade

One day my father he told me
Son don't let it slip away
He took me in his arms, I heard him say~
When you get older
Your wild heart will live your younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid

He said, one day you'll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me...

(Instruments)

When thunder clouds start pouring down
Light a fire they can't put out
Carve your name into those shining stars
He said go venture far beyond these shores
Don't forsake this life of yours
I'll guide you home no matter where you are...

One day my father he told me
Son don't let it slip away
When I was just a kid, I heard him say.....
When you get older
Your wild heart will live your younger days
Think of me if ever you're afraid

He said, one day you'll leave this world behind
So live a life you will remember
My father told me when I was just a child
These are the nights that never die
My father told me...

(Instruments)

These are the nights that never die
My father told me...

(Instruments)

My father told me...

The lyrics, sounds a bit weird without the music.

WEEK 5 : ACTIVITY 1 : YOUR FUTURE SELF

Whainga Ako : What would you do to start your future? e.g. Work, become an apprentice etc...

I would most likely get a job after I finish college. A retail job, I don't quite know, what my first job will be. I would also get my drivers license, around 18-19. The reason I want to get a job quickly, is because, my mum owes the bank around 250,000$, and she has 25 years to pay it all, it's okay because, we have around 8 people in the family.
____________________________________________________________________________________________

WEEK 5 : ACTIVITY 2 : FLYING CARS

Whainga Ako : Choose one car out of all three designs, why did you pick that design.

I'd definitely choose the middle car. Not only because, it looks the cheapest, it also has a roof. The first one has no roof, and I don't know about the second one, because it's two-dimensional.

Even if the third one did have a roof, I don't know, how much fuel it would cost. I just want a normal car, that I can drive in. That's about it.

WEEK 5 : BONUS ACTIVITY : BLADE RUNNER 2049

Whainga Ako : Write a description what New Zealand would look like in the 80-90 years.

2099, January 1st, New Zealand

Everything has moved into the modern age. Microwaves, Refrigerators have all found a innovative way to improve. Auckland is crowded galore with tourists and people. New Zealand holds around 150 Million people, in 90 years the population grows up by a ton! Instead of 7.5 Billion in the world, there are 750 Billion in the world!

New Zealand and the world itself, has put a stop to world hunger and found a way to cure cancer. Aotearoa, looks like flying cars on streets, rocket ships flying every hour, to find a new inhabitable planet. We have truly evolved.

Well... that's it...

What's my prize?

and that was the story of a boy named Edward, as he traversed through the lands of the summer learning journey. The End.

  1. Hey Edward,

This is Jade C from the Summer Learning Journey team. It's great to be back to read and comment on your blog. Woohoo! It's your final SLJ activity post! You have worked so hard and you are a very intelligent person. You made me smile and laugh while I read through each activity. I really enjoyed reading all your posts and I hope you still continue with your blogging!

We love spending Christmas together and celebrate this special day. We always throw a family Christmas party at my house on Christmas eve. We decorate the house with fairy lights, Christmas tree, snow globes, many colourful Christmas wreathes and decorations. We also get chocolate mud cake and other sweet treats on the table covered with white table cloth. Chocolate is always nice to have in celebrations and special occasions.

I think you are very modest and kind. You thought of giving out 260 million dollars to others and get 40 million for your family. Did you think 40 million would be more than enough for your family? It would certainly pay off all the money that you owe and have spare to buy a nice house, car, and many other things that your family needed. Wouldn't it be amazing if we were 'actually' given 300 million?

That was a really good selfie! Given the information that you don't have a phone, what did you take your selfie with? Perhaps your laptop or a camera?

Ooooh it's interesting to find out that you have lived in Bucklands Beach, because I live in Bucklands Beach! I've been to both Eastern and Bucklands Beach many times this holiday and I love it there because they are close to my house are the water is clean.

I once was a student teacher in Pigeon Mountain School :) I was assigned to teach with Mrs Farmer in Room 5 in 2016! Were you at Pigeon Mountain School in 2016?

I really loved the movie Moana. I've watched it with my family and we all loved the movie and the songs in the movie. Did you go to the cinemas to watch it? I like watching movies in the theatre as the sound system is way better than the home stereo and the screen is huge, unlike my 11 inch laptop.

I would also NOT want to be a farmer in the future because I want to become a teacher and do other things that I want and have planned. I want to travel overseas and maybe teach there for a year or two and come back to New Zealand to teach primary students. How about you? Do you have your dream job other than working in retail?

You picked the Jeep Car! I would also pick that car because I like big and high cars. Perhaps it's because I'm small and I want to be big. I also like it because it looks like it's the strongest out of all three cars. However, I do want the flying car as well because I want to try flying over other cars and I would never have to worry about being late or getting stuck in the traffic!

Wow! New Zealand holding 150 million people! With that many people, New Zealand definitely wouldn't look like what it looks like today -spacious, relaxed, calm. Other North Island cities like Hamilton and Whangararei would join with Auckalnd city to expand.

Thank you Edward for being super enthusiastic and motivated to complete all the activities in such a high standard and quality. You have done some amazing work and I'm sure you had fun doing the activities! Please let us know what you felt and what you though about the activities and SLJ in general!

You can still comment on other students' blogs and post personal blog about the things that you are interested in or anything you want to post. It could be your diary, recount, information report, etc.

I will be looking forward to reading more of your posts and I will look out for your comments and feedback!

    All the best,
    Jade C.

  2. Kia Ora Edward,

Congratulations on completing the Summer Learning Journey! What an awesome accomplishment, you should be very proud. Have you been a part of the SLJ before? I read that you have lived in Bucklands Beach too, when did you move North?

I loved reading about how you celebrate with your whanau. It’s my birthday tomorrow and we are going to celebrate with a dinner of my choice at home with my grandparents and Nana normally makes the birthday person a cake. Her baking is always my favourite!

I think your brother would feel very humbled to hear that he is your sporting hero. It’s awesome that you have someone to look up to and for guidance, especially with your sports. When I was younger, I always found my older sister was a great role model in schooling and in sports. We now attend the same University in Wellington, studying completely different things.

I liked the set up you drew for the classroom activity. Can you explain to me what the cookie cushions are? They sound yummy and comfortable at the same time!I really liked the idea of an active class whiteboard, we had one of them when I was at intermediate. Back when they were the bees knees and not many schools had them. It was awesome being able to interact on a whiteboard that was also electronic. My teacher really loved it.

Typically for this programme, Dani (my comment helper) and I will post a comment for each activity that a student completes and posts. However, because you've completed all of your activities and posted them together, it will take us a long time to comment on each activity. Therefore, we are going to make it a priority for both of us to comment on different activities of yours, for the next 10 days until our programme ends on the 26th January.

So keep an eye out for our comments and please feel free to comment back to us and answer the questions we may ask!

Remember that you can now comment on other students blog posts to earn more points before the programme ends on the 26th Jan (next Friday). Each quality comment you make is worth 2 points.
